Sale City has taken its premiership defence to the final day of the season, putting an end to Heyfield’s remarkable run of grand final appearances in the process.

The reigning premier avenged its qualifying final defeat with a 16.11 (107) to 10.8 (68) victory in Saturday’s preliminary final at Churchill’s Gaskin Park.

The Bulldogs will now meet Yarram in this weekend’s grand final at Traralgon Recreation Reserve, with the Kangaroos condemned to watching from the sidelines for the first time since 2011.

On the plus side, it also ends a succession of four straight years of grand final day heartbreak for Heyfield, with 2012 the only victory among the five deciders.

Meanwhile, Woodside will also vie for back-to-back flags by winning its way into the grand final with a preliminary final victory over Heyfield.

More to follow.
